‘Phantom’ is the oldest model name in the motoring world. The first Phantom was launched in 1925 as a successor to the Silver Ghost. This is the eighth generation car (“car” in R-R parlance) and its design is largely based on the 2003 Phantom VII, the first Rolls developed by BMW.
However, see the new Phantom in the metal, as we did at the world premiere in London, and it looks leaner and more muscular. It’s even…dare we say it? – subtle sports. Rolls’ traditional ‘Pantheon’ grille is integrated into the body for the first time, framed by bracketed headlights with frosted glass inside.

The Phantom is still huge, of course (even the 22-inch alloys look a little lost in those wheel arches), but its side profile is more dynamic, with a sweeping roofline and tapered tail. A large amount of hand-polished stainless steel adorns the grille, door handles and window frames, making the car shine under the studio lights.
The basis of the new Phantom is a new aluminum space frame. This, the company says, will be “scalable to the size and weight requirements of different future Rolls-Royce models, including those with different drive, traction and control systems.” Reading between the lines, that includes the upcoming all-wheel-drive Cullinan SUV. It’s also 30 percent stiffer than the outgoing Phantom’s chassis.
The engine is also new: a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 that develops 571 horsepower and a powerful 664 pound-feet of torque at 1,700 rpm. With an eight-speed automatic gearbox linked to the satnav to anticipate shifts, Rolls promises “near silence” in the cabin and the “quiet acceleration associated with state events”. All you need is a set of front fin flags.
No performance figures have been quoted yet, but expect a marked improvement over the old car (sorry, “car”), which achieved 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 149mph. Appropriate then.

Open the Phantom’s huge, heavy doors (hinged at the rear, as before) and you’ll be greeted with the piece de resistance. “The Gallery” spans the entire width of the board and is a hermetically sealed glass fronted space where owners can “curate” their own custom works of art.
Two examples were shown in the Phantom reveal. Nymphenburg’s “Immortal Beauty” is an elaborate display of porcelain flowers, while Thorsten Franck’s “Digital Soul” is a map of an owner’s DNA recreated in 24-carat gold. However, we would question the effect the latter would have on resale value…
Naturally, most Phantom owners will be sitting in the back, where they can enjoy the biggest version yet of the R-R twinkling Starlight Headliner, heated side and center armrests, plus a wet bar complete with glasses of whiskey and champagne glasses.
As expected, there’s no word yet on pricing, but it seems likely to be around £350,000 ($460,000 in the US). Beyond that, with the number of personal options available, the only limit is your bank balance. It’s time to dream big.
